Yesterday on train up to Birmingham to play my fir Yesterday on train up to Birmingham to play my first Nutcracker performances of the Christmas season @bhamroyalballet I had the misfortune to be surrounded, on my early morning train, by drunk soccer /football fans on their way to an afternoon match. They took up a disabled access bay, & even when a young a woman wheelchair user needed that area they barely made space for her, and stood around her continuing their drinking and their conversations, which were predominantly a text book demonstration of racism, homophobia & misogyny, punctuated with unacceptable /extreme levels of swearing. The guard came through & they picked on him too, till his hands were shaking when he checked my ticket, and it was clear that no one was able or willing to do anything about these anti social men. I was really at the point where I was ready to stand up, use their own language and tell them to “ for f*cks sake, just shut the f*ck up and show some respect you f*cking c**ts”, but then an impeccably dressed - possibly gay - older gent joined the train, required one of them to give him a seat, and then engaged these unpleasant blokes in polite conversation - they made fun of him for many reasons but mainly for saying he didn’t like football. Nonetheless he stood his ground, ever measured and dignified, and for that I am so incredibly grateful - they didn’t stop drinking, they didn’t stop swearing, they didn’t stop telling (likely fictional) tall tales about girls they were bedding, but they didn’t entirely get their way. Half of what is wrong with the world is that decent people are scared to stand up for decency, or to wear tartan trousers and a stylish hat. We needed more classy, stylish, brave men ( & women). Thanks to @janecreates23 for a fantastic evening o Thanks to @janecreates23 for a fantastic evening out for screening of lovely @disneystudios film, Young Woman and the Sea, and to hear the awesome women at the core of the creative team talking about their experiences in the making of the film. I especially loved the choice of a female composer for this epic soundtrack and that the music was recorded in London - our session musicians really are the best.
